Excelling World Language students were honored at the Department of World Languages Student Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 1 in the auditorium.

“The World Language Recognition Ceremony, there are two main reasons for it,” Spanish teacher Miguel Palacios said. “The first reason is to recognize all those students who have successfully completed two years of study in either Spanish or German, so because those students are the minority of all Sunrise Mountain students we want to recognize, hey you took a harder path to graduate. The second reason for the ceremony is to individually honor a couple of students from each class for their high academic performance in that language and so they’ll be recognized on stage with certificate and a pin.”

Each teacher chose criteria for their students and who will be recognized at the ceremony whether it is based on grades or participation.

“I think they have to have pursued the language and it takes a lot of determination to pick up, especially in our culture when it’s not necessary and it’s not like were  we’re surrounded by other countries and need to know other languages,” senior Alexa Bailey said.

This ceremony included student speakers, including Bailey, who gave a small speech about their experience with the language in both Spanish and English.

“I’m very passionate about Spanish and I was an exchange student in Costa Rica my junior year, so I think I have drastically improved and it’s showing in my classes,” Bailey said.

This year is the sixth consecutive year that Sunrise Mountain has honored its World Language students.
