On March 2 and 3, students traveled to the Phoenix Convention Center to compete at the DECA state conference. DECA students had been looking forward to competing, some had been preparing for a long time.

“Everyone prepares differently, I had some students that prepared a lot and probably have been preparing since October,” DECA advisor Tricia White said. “They have to take a 100 question test and that is 1/3 of their grade and 2/3 is their presentation.”

13 Thirteen Sunrise Mountain students will be advancing to internationals, where they will compete against 14,500 other students from around the United States and 16 other countries in Orlando, Florida.

“My only goal was to make it to nationals and I’m going to Florida!” senior David Scott said.

DECA prepares students for the business world, whether it’s in marketing, hospitality, management or finance.

“It teaches you presentation skills, speaking skills, how to articulate what you are trying to say, reading business information and then learning how to say it to an adult in a business setting, so there is no high school stuff,” White said.

Sunrise Mountain has the most students advancing to internationals in the Peoria Unified School District.
